IIS is a file and web application server that can be used on a local area network (LAN), a wide area network (WAN), or the Internet. IIS can be installed on Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000 Server & Windows.NET server; scaled down versions are available for Windows XP, Windows 2000 Prossional, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows 95/98.

The main services of IIS are ‘WWW- World Wide Web Service’, ‘FTP- File Transfer Protocol Service’, ‘SMTP- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Service’ and ‘NNTP- Network News Transport Protocol Service’

IIS supports dynamic as well as static web pages and full support to connect to external data sources such as Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server. IIS 3+ supports Active Server Page (ASP) technology, which means that applications - including ActiveX controls - can be imbedded in Web pages that modify the content sent back to users. IIS 5+ supports the latest development runtime called ASP.NET
